Whether it is for purchasing, renting or having your forklift serviced, it is always better to have an idea of what to expect. Here is a list of frequently asked questions about forklifts:

  • Which type of forklift is best for me?

There are many types of forklifts and they all fall under one of three categories: Electric, diesel or LPG. Electric types are far more efficient than diesel or LPG forklifts, which makes them the least expensive to run but, they have to be recharged every two hours. Diesel forklifts are most suitable for heavy loads as they generate a lot of power and they are more fuel efficient than LPGs. Depending on the kind of work you need the forklift for, we can help you make the best choice.

  • Should I rent or buy a forklift?

The short answer is: Rent for short-term and buy for the long term. If your forklift needs are seasonal, if you don't use it extensively in your business, if you're a small business without a lot of capital, go for a rental. It is also a good idea to rent the models which you're considering for purchase to test them before you finalize your decision.

  • Should I buy a used or a new forklift?

If your usage is under two hours per day, a used forklift might suit your needs. If your usage exceeds three hours per day, buying a new forklift would be a better option. Buying a relatively new used forklift reduces the cost of owning a forklift significantly while still delivering good results.

  • How do I choose a good used forklift?

Age and maintenance both matter when you are buying a used forklift. An old forklift that is maintained well might surpass the performance of a younger poorly maintained one. Read our blog on the important tips for buying a used forklift for more information.

  • What are the best forklift brands in Burnaby?

Heli, Mitsubishi, JLG, Tailift, TVH, Blue Giant and Lift-Rite are some of the best brands available in Burnaby. Westminster Lift Truck & Services are dealers for all of them.

  • What are the attachments available for forklifts?

Standard pallet forklifts need specialized attachments to carry out different functions:

  1. Sideshifts for horizontal load movement

  2. Fork extensions for long loads

  3. Rotators for 360-degree motion

  4. Clamps to hold down appliances

  5. Booms for carrying carpets or coils of wire

The lifting capacity of a forklift is affected by attachments, so choose a forklift that can handle the load after the attachments are made.

  • How often should I service my forklift?

Depending on the model, a forklift will have to be serviced every 250-500 hours of usage. For a used forklift that is running for one or two hours a day, a repair and service would be necessary once every six months. When you purchase a forklift, you can opt for a maintenance plan that covers services and repairs for a stipulated duration.

  • Is special training necessary to operate forklifts?

WORKSAFE deems it mandatory for forklift operators to be safety certified. They must go through a combination of classroom-style lessons and practical training. Heavy fines can be levied if there is a failure to comply with the regulations. More than anything, an operator without safety training can cause injury to himself and others, which is why WORKSAFE regulations exist in the first place.

  • Is a WORKSAFE certificate permanent?

No. An operator must renew it every two years and also in case of reports of unsafe operation, accidents or if they have to operate a different type of forklift.

  • Should I get forklift insurance?

Proper insurance will protect you against any liability claims arising from damages to property (including the forklift itself) or people. Certain insurances even cover the cost of rented equipment while your forklift is being repaired. So, it is wise to spend a little to avoid complications. Forklifts are an essential part of many businesses. Westminster Lift Truck & Services can help you make the right choice for your needs. Contact us today to discuss your forklift requirements.
